What’s the point of a Leave-In Conditioner?

Leave-in conditioners offer a wide range of benefits. As an extra step in your hair care routine, leave-ins can provide more moisture (always a plus for curls), soften and soothe hair, and help with frizz. Think of a leave-in conditioner like a backup or reinforcement that ensures your hair is moisturised and protected between washes.

The main difference between a regular conditioner and a leave-in conditioner is that a regular conditioner is rinsed out of your hair. A leave-in conditioner is designed to stay in the hair and offers many benefits such as added moisture and help with detangling.

There’s also no difference between a leave-in conditioner and our Free Curls Leave-in Moisturiser. We’ve called it a ‘moisturiser’ to emphasise its properties. It will keep your curls moisturised, nourished, and protected from breakage and things like heat damage.

Our moisturiser, as a good leave-in formula should be, is made from beneficial ingredients that nurture and soothe curls. Emollients like behentrimonium methosulfate and cetearyl alcohol are great moisturising agents that soften and moisturise strands. These ingredients also make detangling much easier. Plant extracts like aloe vera and chamomile soothe the scalp, while strengthening curls and protecting them from damage.

Our leave-in moisturiser is free from silicones, parabens, sulphates, and synthetics that dull shine and prevent hair from absorbing moisture. The lightweight formula will nourish curls without weighing them down. It works well for all hair types, especially thin and low to medium density strands. Hair with low to medium density can sometimes struggle to absorb the moisture it needs, making our leave-in a fantastic option.

Those with higher density or thicker hair will love the detangling and nourishing benefits of our leave-in.

How to use our Leave-In Moisturiser

There are a few ways to use the Free Curls Leave-in Moisturiser. It can be used after rinsing out shampoo and regular conditioner and to revive curls that need a refresh after wash day.

Prior styling

After washing, separate your hair into sections - two to four sections work best. Pump a small amount of the leave-in moisturiser into your hands and emulsify. Apply to each section, using your fingers to gently work through the hair and shape the curls. We recommended starting with a small amount and applying more as needed. You might need more product depending on the density of your hair.

The leave-in moisturiser was not designed to provide hold, but it will give your hair the nourishment it needs. You can always add a heavier cream or gel for more hold and use your favourite styling method such as raking, praying hands, or combing to apply both products onto your hair.

Refreshing your curls

You can also use our leave-in moisturiser to refresh your curls. Simply mix a small amount in your hands with water to emulsify before applying to your hair. Another convenient option is to mix a small amount of the leave-in with 300mls of water in a spray bottle. Spritz your hair with the mixture before styling your refreshed curls as desired.
